The Geography of Litter - GPS Data

 Litter has a high potential for transport through aquatic environment, rivers and oceans are repeatedly found to not only contain, but displace large quantities of litter.  Pathways of litter from land to rivers are far more complex, and exact data on land-based transport methods and levels of contribution is often left to speculation. Facilitating factors of land-based transport are theorised to include the weight and material composition of the item, the incline of the terrain and meteorological forces such as wind and rain. This study explores the potential of human disperal of land-based litter by tagging bottle litter  with GPS trackers during a high footfall event. Data included are the coordinate location output of 9 GPS tagged litter items during the 2017 Oxford vs Cambridge in Putney. Included in the excel are details of  bottle name, coordinates, date, time and speed, collected at a 10 - 30 minute interval. Also included are shapefiles (BottleShapefiles) created in QGIS that include point data of coordinate output for each bottle throughout its journey.

GPS tagged Lucozade bottles were deposited during a high footfall event and coordinates collected on either 10 or 30 minute intervals. Bottles were deposited at equal intervals along the embankment within a one kilometer distance north of Putney Bridge.
